Getting the Fin Right Moves to Comic Book Club
My Savage Dragon interviews have been going since 2008.
Very, very few American comics creators have ever been as closely associated with a title as Erik Larsen is with Savage Dragon. The Image Comics co-founder has been writing and drawing the series since it launched in 1992, and with #275 coming up soon, Larsen is approaching the longest-ever run on a mainstream comic by one writer/artist (Dave Sim’s 300 issues of Cerebus).
Since 2008 — that’s 16 years, meaning half the entire life of the title — Larsen and I have been conducting a series of commentary track-style interviews that break down each issue. One of the longest continuously-running columns in the comics news space, "Getting the Fin Right" has moved from Comic Related to Newsarama to ComicBook, and today launches its new era at Comic Book Club.
If you don’t know them, Comic Book Club is a live talk show and comic book podcast held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. It’s hosted by Pete LePage, Justin Tyler, and Alex Zalben. The site that has grown up around the show has space for a number of other podcasts, as well as interviews and other features about comics. It’s one of the rare spaces that actually dedicates as much or more of its time to comic books than their adaptations, so when I was thinking about friends who might be willing to host Getting the Fin Right, Alex Zalben was right at the top of my list. It’s a privilege to be featured on a site that is full of great interviews and discussions from people who are genuinely passionate about comics. I’ll be doing the Savage Dragon columns there, but will likely also pitch them some other stuff as well.
